Following the expiry of the 14 days in which the Notice of Vacancy has been displayed and 10 Local Government Electors for the Parish have declined to call an Election to fill the Casual Vacancy, the Parish Council is now in a position to fill the Vacancy by the process of Co-option.
Interested persons are invited to write to the Parish Council via the Parish Council Clerk by the closing date of Monday 21 November 2016 formally declaring their willingness to be co-opted and stating why they wish to be considered.
To be eligible to become a Parish Councillor, candidates must fulfil the criteria below:-
• Be a British Subject or a citizen of the Irish Republic or the European Union and a resident in the UK
• Be 18 or over on the day of nomination AND
• Be on the electoral register for the area in which you are seeking election OR
• Living within 3 miles of it, working, owning/leasing land or property in that Parish for at least 12 months
You will not be able to stand as a Parish Councillor if
• you hold a paid Office or employment made or confirmed by the Parish Council
• you are the subject of a bankruptcy restriction order or interim order
• you have been convicted of a criminal offence and sentenced to not less than 3 months imprisonment (including a suspended sentence in the last 5 years)
You can also be disqualified from holding Office by Order of the Court, if you have incurred illegal expenditure (when acting as a Councillor) of over £2,000 and if you have been found guilty of corrupt or illegal practices under the Representation of the People Act (1982) or the Audit Commission Act 1998
Candidates are requested to attend the Council meeting on Thursday 1 December 2016 at Upleadon Village Hall and will be asked to address the Council for not more than 5 minutes supporting their application to join the Parish Council, following which the Council will make a resolution co-opting the successful candidate. The newly co-opted Member will be required to sign a Declaration of Acceptance of Office prior to being invited to take part in the remainder of the meeting.
