Indian Supper Evening March 2020

Around 40 people came along to our fab Indian Supper Evening for a wonderful evening of food, conversation and Indian music. A fantastic range of starters, to include vegetarian and gluten free options were enjoyed before moving on the the main courses where several choices were available, again catering for vegetarians and offering gluten free curries! Those who had any space left enjoyed the deserts (mini magnum ice creams, strawberry and chocolate gateaux and fruit salad with lashings of cream). We had a great table of diners from Pauntley who left this fab review (maybe we should be in TripAdvisor???) “On behalf of the Pauntley attendees at the supper this evening we’d like to thank you both for a smashing event! We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  The atmosphere was good, the setting was good and the food was delicious.  We appreciate all the hard work that went into the evening.  Fantastic job, well done! “. Also, we received thanks from some of the newest villagers to move in who came along with several guests ” Just wanted to say thank you to the organisers of last nights Indian evening. Lovely food and friendly people! Glad we moved here, small village with a big heart.”

February 2020’s Pop up Pub

Many thanks to all of you who braved the cold and wet and came out on Friday night for some Fish and Chips (maybe even a Mushy Pea Bomb?). We had some new faces (welcome!) and some old faces and it was great to see a wide variety of people coming along. The cold and wet weather didn’t keep people away and it was really busy with plenty of good chit-chat going on. We also sold several tickets for the forthcoming Indian Supper, so if you haven’t bought yours yet, time is running out.

General Knowledge Quiz

A good time was had by all at Upleadon Village Hall on Saturday, 22nd February 2020, at the annual church quiz.   As usual varied rounds of questions set all our brains working and the fish and chips in the interval gave us a mental rest before completing the final rounds.   It is always a popular and well supported evening, even if you come away realising that you don’t know as much as you thought you did.  I can say that because our table came last!     Thank you Mike for all your hard work, and once again, giving us a very enjoyable evening which raised £278.50 for church funds. Christine Draper.

January 2020’s Pop up Pub

Those who wanted a Brexit free zone (or those who wanted to come down for a bit of a Brexit chat!) came to the Village Hall for a drink or two, some great conversation, and for many, also some supper provided by Made Without Gluten and their fab pink mobile Fish and Chip Van. It was a great turn out – maybe those who had been abstaining during dry January decided to end it a day (or evening) early – I know of at least one person who did. It was great to see so many Villagers supporting the pub. February’s Pop up Pub will come round a little bit quicker, being only 4 weeks away – see you all then!

Mike’s Music Quiz

The 7th Upleadon Pop Quiz saw 11 teams do battle to proclaim themselves winners. The usual excellent fish and chips from the Tudor Chip Shop in Newent provided the halftime food. It was a close finish, but this year there was no need for a tiebreaker. Heather Cowles’ team The Gin Geanies came first on 79pts out of a possible 90, with Pretty Vacant second on 76pts. Four other teams scored in the 70s. We raised an excellent £320 for the hall. Many thanks to Martyn Turner for his help, on what became a very loud evening as more drink was consumed ! New Year’s Eve 2019/2020 Pop up Pub

Around 45 fellow villagers came to the Village Hall to celebrate the end of 2019 and the arrival of 2020. A wonderful buffet was laid on with all manner of nick knacks and snacks including a variety of desserts and a cheese board. Champagne and Prosecco was available for those who wanted to celebrate the New Year with some bubbles, or the usual Pop-up Pub range of drinks were available. We all saw the New Year in with a countdown and the Big Ben 12 Chimes, followed by a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne. Many thanks to all who supported the Village Hall events throughout 2019 and we look forward to welcoming you to future events in 2020 and beyond.

Christmas 2019 Lunch

Sunday 8th December. A massive Thank You to everyone that came along to today’s Christmas Lunch and many thanks for the fantastic feedback you gave to us during and after the event. I was too busy and forgot to take a photo of the Hall with everyone in it having a fab time, but did get a quick shot before you all turned up. The Newent Rangers were extremely helpful and we couldn’t run the event without their great support. Thanks also to the very kind person who made a donation to them after the loss of some of their jam and produce sales – a great gesture and very much appreciated. We hope you all had enough to eat and enjoyed the lunch and are now set up for Christmas. See you all at our next events, Merry Christmas from the Village Hall Committee.

Pop up Pub and Fish and Chips

Friday 29th November 2019. It was a cold and crisp evening with frost already on the ground by the time the Fish and Chip van and the Pop up Pub opened for business which possibly kept some people away. A thoroughly enjoyable time was had by those who did come up and there was still a great atmosphere in the hall. Our new stock lines of fresh Gloucester Ales and locally produced ciders went down well but the biggest seller of the night was our fabulous crisp chilled White Wines. We’ll have new stock ready and waiting to be sold for our New Year’s Eve Pop up Pub (tickets only – all sold out but we are running a reserve list) and our normal event with Fish and Chips returns at the end of January.

Friday 25th October 2019. Despite a rather rainy day and evening, we were well supported by a large attendance for our end of the month Pop up Pub event supported by Made Without Gluten Fish and Chips. We heard lots of great feedback about Paul and Adele’s great Fish and Chips, I now know he also does Calamari, halloumi, whitebait and many other sumptuous options. It was standing room only at one point and we were even supported by one pair of new villagers, moving into the village that day, and also may friends from Brand Green, Pool Hill and Pauntley. Please excuse the slightly blurry photo – it was rather humid in there after all the rain.

9-Pin Skittles against Pauntley

Friday 18th October 2019 saw Upleadon Village Hall host the second skittle match of the year against Pauntley Village (including Brand Green and Pool Hill). We both fielded teams of 13 players; I think the saying is ‘strength in number’ and for Pauntley it was, however for Upleadon it wasn’t. We managed to keep close scores for a while but sadly lost out after 5 frames 321 to 367 (I mis-counted Meg’s score on the blackboard – sorry Meg!). Our new trophy (already resplendent with 5 shields on it) was presented to Pauntley via Paul initially as the highest total scorer with 39 but was then handed over to Beryl as the highest individual frame score of 13! A great buffet was laid on by Pauline, who worked tirelessly to make sure everyone was well fed.

Pop-Up Pub

We held our first Pop up Pub event on Friday 27th September 2019. A new bar had been constructed, ‘new’ furniture bought especially, and a range of drinks purchased in preparation for the onslaught! We had fabulous support from many villagers and a few from outside the area as well! Everyone we spoke to said they had a fantastic time and were so looking forward to the next one on 25th October when the Fish and Chip Van would also be in attendance.

Afternoon Cream Tea

Held on Wednesday June 26th 2019. Well it might not have been a warm summers afternoon in lovely sunshine, but it was still a great event. Many thanks to all those who came to this afternoon’s Cream Tea and we hope you enjoyed yourself and had plenty of (home made) scones, cream, jam and tea. We look forward to seeing you at our next event.

Plant Sale and Coffee Morning

Saturday May 18th 2019. Upleadon Village Hall held a plant sale.

Many thanks to all those who came and bought plants, tea, coffee and cake. Most were surprised at the amount of plants and variety on offer. Hopefully all those who bought plants now have more colourful gardens and are enjoying the look they bring. There was a good variety of geraniums, petunias, dahlias, bizzy lizzies (impatiens), nicotianas as well as tomatos, cucumbers, sweet and hot peppers and chillis for sale. We hope to be able to offer an even better selection next year.

9-Pin Skittles against Brand Green/Pauntley

Saturday 20th April 2019 at Brand Green Village Hall. A great evening was had on Saturday at the Brand Green Village Hall for our regular (twice a year) friendly 9-pin skittles match. Both teams were well supported with 12 players – we even gave one of our players to Brand Green to even up the numbers! Turned out we gave them one of our better players! Despite fighting hard to the end, I think we were ‘weighed down’ by the excellent buffet laid on in-between frames 3 and 4. Thanks to Anne and all of her helpers for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Final scores were Brand Green/Pauntley 357, Upleadon 344 (not quite as per the scoreboard). Let’s see if we can do better come the Autumn for the return match!

Indian Supper Evening

Saturday March 30th, 2019. A wonderful evening was had by those who joined us for wonderful evening of Indian food and sublime Indian music. A variety of starters (including vegetable samosas, vegetable pakoras, chicken tikka, onion bhajis, poppadoms and accompaniments) started the evening off, with main meals following shortly afterwards (chicken tikka balti, chicken tikka mosala, lamb saagwala, vegetable korma, bombay aloo and pilau rice). The meal was rounded off with black forest gateaux or mini magnum ice creams, with plenty of food for all. We look forward to seeing you at our next food event.

Mike’s Fun Pop Quiz

Saturday March 9th, 2019. Mike’s Fun Pop Quiz returned to the Upleadon Village Hall for the 6th year running. Some of the usual teams couldn’t make it, but we still had 10 teams out and they all seemed to enjoy themselves. Again we had a tie for 1st place which made an exciting finish with a tiebreak question. We made an excellent £308 for the hall.
